Pairs or Better(search on Board Game Geek)
The problem with this game seems to be that the designer couldn't distinguish between excitement and frustration: most of the time it's pretty clear that you should just be going for a specific hand, such as a royal flush, and pretty much the only thing that can stop you is unlucky die rolls (well, another player could theoretically attempt to stop you by taking the cards you need, but then they aren't getting their royal flush). I was rather unmotivated to spend 30-minutes on a dice-rolling fest to get some somewhat non-random poker hands, when I could have done in a fraction of the time by just playing a round of standard double-draw poker. Not to mention that the cards supplied with the game are probably some of the cheapest-made cards I've ever seen. If you want a good die-rolling poker-hand building game, I recommend you go to old rummage sales and find High Hand, one of the designs by Robert Abbott. It's not as great as Bob's classic game of Eleusis, but at least it's a good game. Return to Introduction |
