Game Reviews: Mind Games, year 2006

These are Wei-Hwa Huang's personal reviews of games that might or might not have been submitted to the Mensa Mind Games event in 2006. (You'll have to go to that site to get the official list of submitted games, when they decide to post it.)

    Each player is dealt a card -- two of the players will receive a card with the same word on it (something simple like "card" or "place" or "banana"), while all the other players get a blank card that has "???" on it. There is one round of clue giving, where each player must announce one word. Then, players who wish may then (secretly) guess which two players have the actual word. This is followed by another round of clue giving, and another round of guessing where players who did not guess after the first round must guess. Players earn 3 points for a good guess in the first round, 2 points for a good guess in the second round, and 1 point if the guess was incorrect. However, if you have one of the words, then you get 0 points unless both you and your "partner" guessed correctly. First to ten points wins, and clues and scores are kept track on wet-erase boards (which aren't of great quality and don't really seem necessary for the game but probably help in justifying its price).

    Overall, I liked this game quite a bit, mostly because of its simplicity of rules that leave quite a lot of room for creative thinking. (I'm starting to suspect my favorite party games are those that set fixed boundaries for creativity but don't stifle it entirely.) At first it seems somewhat unfair that the word-receivers have more stringent restrictions on how they earn points, but it's soon apparent that it's actually not that hard to find your partner when none of the people know what the word is. What the game seems to truly be missing, however, is any direct award for bluffing -- it seems like making a lot of people vote for you when you're not the word-giver should be worth something. Time for a house rule?
