You remember that old 5x5 poker game, where you drew 25 cards from a deck,
one at a time, and tried to form a poker square with good poker hands
going across and down? Well, this game is similar, except that it uses
letters and has two players. Each player, in turn, chooses a letter to
put in their 5x5 letter grid, and the opponent has to put the same letter
in as well. Score points based on words of 5 letters or less formed in
a row or column with consecutive letters.
There are only 6 types of cubes; 5 cubes have the letters
A through F, 5 cubes have the letters G through L, 5 cubes have M through
R, 5 have S through X, three have Y and Z, and two more blank cubes can
be anything the player wants. What that does mean is that there are
some annoying limitations on how many of certain letter combinations
can be in the game -- but since both players are working under
the same limitations, it's not so bad.
See those photographs above for a sample endgame position. The game is
somewhat fascinating because it's a word game that verges on the edge
of being an abstract -- there's hidden-knowledge but no randomness and
no time factor, which is pretty unique for a word game.
