Game Reviews: Mind Games, year 2005

These are Wei-Hwa Huang's personal reviews of games that might or might not have been submitted to the Mensa Mind Games event in 2005. (You'll have to go to that site to get the official list of submitted games, when they decide to post it.)

    A two-dimensional version of the classic game "Shut The Box." Each player is given a fixed 3x4 grid of numbers labeled from 1 to 12, with 17 "wall spaces" between pair of adjacent numbers. On one's turn, each player rolls two dice. They can then treat the dice as two separate numbers, or as the sum of the two rolls. The player must then place a wall on one edge of each number, doing nothing that turn if a number is already covered. Once a number has all its walls covered, the player covers it and collects that number of "Boxem Bucks" from the opponents. Game ends when one person has covered all the numbers.

    Really really big and elaborate pieces for a game that isn't. The basic concept is not a bad game, but many of the design decisions, such as the paper money and giant thick cardboard mats, seem like they were chosen not for gameplay reasons but to, well, make sure the game has paper money and thick cardboard. If anything, they hinder the flow of the game. There are lots of ways that I could actually improve this game to make it more fun, including things as simple as making the rules understandable. It feels less like an actual game and more like a sample board game from some advertising agency's portfolio.
