I enjoy writing but I haven't got the time to write the next Great Canadian novel (though I have written a short story.) Instead, I get together with some friends weekly and we have creative writing sessions, in which we do writing exercises.
I've been doing research into creativity and I've learned a lot about it. I used to think that a person was either creative or not and if you weren't creative it was no use trying. Well, I've proved myself wrong. It's actually pretty easy to practice creativity, and that's what we do when we get together.
I highly recommend several books if you want to learn about this: "Wild Mind" by Natalie Goldberg, "Lateral Thinking" by Edward de Bono, and "A Whack on the Side of the Head" by Roger Von Oech. The first book is very related to writing, the other two are about more general creativity. All three are interesting and well-written. It was the "Wild Mind" book that first got me writing again -- after high-school when I stopped taking English classes, I stopped writing. When I started again, I realized how much I missed it.
