Faux News times deux

updated... (see end of post) updated again...

Recently, Josh Marshall noted that Fox News' website had put up a "poor attempt at humor" (to use Fox News' own words)as straight news. After posting about it, the story was taken down without explanation and the bogus quotes also silently removed. So he called them up, got a statement from them, and eventually FN put up a retraction and apology.

Good times, right? But at least they'll sharpen up in the future.

Tax shelters

From the New York Times:

America's biggest corporations are increasingly funneling profits earned in the United States to tax havens around the globe, depriving the United States Treasury of anywhere from $10 billion to $20 billion in lost tax revenue each year, according to a new study

The study, to be published today in the trade journal Tax Notes, says that United States multinational corporations shifted $75 billion in domestic profits last year to no-tax and low-tax foreign havens like Bermuda and Ireland.

[...]

The earlier study said that the rise in foreign earnings was not accompanied by any gain in real economic activity in the tax havens,

What else is there to say? The money isn't really going to Bermuda or Ireland or the Cayman Islands to any large degree.

Canwest Global flavours your news

Hey, I didn't even know that Canwest Global has this policy (NYT link):

But now Reuters has asked Canada's largest newspaper chain to remove its writers' names from some articles.

The dispute centers on a policy adopted earlier this year by CanWest Global Communications [...] to substitute the word "terrorist" in articles for terms like "insurgents" and "rebels."

(emphasis added)

Canwest goes on to describe this as removing the gloss of PC and bias for their readers' benefit.

Man.

On inequality

Bill Moyers' "This is the Fight of Our Lives" speech is a must read.

"The middle class and working poor are told that what's happening to them is the consequence of Adam Smith's 'Invisible Hand.' This is a lie. What's happening to them is the direct consequence of corporate activism, intellectual propaganda, the rise of a religious orthodoxy that in its hunger for government subsidies has made an idol of power, and a string of political decisions favoring the powerful and the privileged who bought the political system right out from under us."

Enron tapes

Thomas Leavitt's been working as a research assistant on a case between Snohomish County and Enron, transcribing hours of audio. The fruits of his team's labour are available at FERC (follow his links; it's a mess o'Java and PDFs). He picks out a few of the most relevant and explosive quotes, things like

"So the rumor's true? They're f------ takin' all the money back from you guys? All those money you guys stole from those poor grandmothers in California?"

CBS has the story too, including source docs -- memos (the memos have been public for two years now) and audio of Enron trader conversations -- not just gloating, but pretty obvious ploys to shut down generators to manipulate prices.

I hope no one still thinks Enron was an innocent windfall winner, or thinks that they weren't engaged in illegal market manipulation.
