Victory is not assured.
Via Sam Rosenfeld, we see how the White House girds for a
political battle they really care about:
Indeed, the Senate Republican leadership aide noted that the White
House has been frank with Congressional Republican leaders in saying
that Bush has planned "no exit strategy" even if public opinion polls
continue to show the president's proposal sinking rapidly.
(emphasis added)
I guess Bush isn't looking to win this one, then. Back in 1999, he
said:
'Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the president to
explain to us what the exit strategy is,' Bush said." [Houston
Chronicle, 4/9/99]

It takes a family. And a state. No, two states.
So via the Village Gate, I read that Rick Santorum has a book
called "It Takes A Family: Conservatism And The Common Good", the title
of which is a response to Hillary Clinton's use of the African proverb
"It takes a village to raise a child."
I think this is great stuff! Who better to say it (just) takes a family
than a man who evidently needs the resources of two states to raise his
kids: the state he and his family live in, and the one that funds
his children's expensive education. (All the better that he represents
the latter while living in the former, but I guess "represent" is a
pretty flexible term these days.)

So if it's all so inevitable...
Rumsfeld:
"You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and a tank can
(still) be blown up," he said. The same applies to the much smaller
Humvee utility vehicles that, without extra armor, are highly
vulnerable to the insurgents' weapon of choice in Iraq, the improvised
explosive device that is a roadside threat to Army convoys and patrols.
Well. Given that sort of fatalism, I wonder what sort of armored
protection he rides in when he visits Iraq...
Anyways, much more substantial commentary by Juan Cole.

Democracy, Despotism... man, learning this stuff is hard work.
Via Atrios, The New Republic got a great catch: President Bush
apparently still thinks Pakistan is a democracy.
At this point, I really would prefer an animatronic President...

On exit polls
Via Attaturk, the Washington Post has a doozy of an
editorial. Lightly paraphrasing, it says that since exit polls
clearly favored one candidate but the election results came out solidly
the other way, there was clearly massive election fraud.
Or rather, massive election fraud in the Ukraine. The Washington Post
makes no mention of any similar cases closer to home that have
had some similarly disturbing details.
update: Forgot to mention that in both cases, Putin favoured the winning
candidate.
