Just dump those boxes anywhere.
So with Dose starting up, Vancouver has three dailies competing. I
can't imagine the city can possibly support that many. It's a bit like
the gas wars of 1999 in that sense, but with a lot less value for the
consumer. I'll hopefully rant at slightly greater length later about
that.
Anyways, Ian King wonders
if Dose cleared their boxes with the city. Mmmaybe, but I doubt the city
said "Go ahead, Dose, put your box right in front of a Canada Post mailbox."
(This was taken right in front of Broadway station, Monday night.)
Moving on, we have a 24 Hours box right beside a bus pole. 24 Hours,
of course, had
many of their boxes confiscated for not filing permits. I also saw a bit
about them on TV recently where the city representative said the way 24 had
chained many of their boxes around bus poles was an impediment to bus
passengers' boarding. I wonder if this qualifies as any less of an
obstruction. It's certainly not fixed to anything this time, at least. (Broadway and Commercial, Monday night)

Metronews
I was going to blog about the incredibly useless factoids in the new
free daily Metro News. Exhibit A, as I read it in the paper,
went like this:
Lawyers scoff at Sikh leader's political advice
A top Sikh leader in India who admonished Sikh Canadian MPs to not
support same-sex marriage legislation has no authority to do so and,
moreover, shows a remarkable lack of understanding of the issue, say
some observers here.
Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti -- acting as the Jathedar Akal Takht, the
highest Sikh authority in Amritsar -- told the Toronto Star's Martin
Regg Cohn this week that he warned six Sikh Canadian MPs visiting India
that they would be ostracized from the community if they supported Bill
C-38.
And that was it! You call that coverage? That wasn't even half the
story! It was just the beginning!
But when I went on the web to double-check, I saw that their article
online was actually a full article, one that expanded on the
"nut graf". So a passing grade to the online service, and a D
for the paper version, I guess.

You can't pay me enough to read this.
Ars Technica has a review (subsequently relabelled as a "preview") of
the new Mac Mini. Great news, I thought, so I decided to read it.
Unfortunately, what I read was some horrible mishmash of blogger-esque
narcissistic stream of consciousness "writing" semi-squashed into a
regular review format. I thought writing this awful was confined to
amateur sites (I consider AT to be pro-am) or my local free computing
monthly. Now, if I wanted a blog writeup, I would go read one. I went to
AT because I wanted a technical, professional (p)review.
I complain about videogame journalism from time to time because the standard
of journalism and writing there tends to be pretty bad, but this is even worse.
