Rumsfeld: Chump

(Via Blah3 and Juan Cole.)

Rumsfeld said in response to a question:

To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links [Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda].

He then almost immediately turned around and tried to retract, saying he had misunderstood the question:

A question I answered today at an appearance before the Council on Foreign Relations regarding ties between Al Qaeda and Iraq regrettably was misunderstood.

The verb is "was misunderstood", and the object was "A question". As the question's answerer, we must assume Rumsfeld was the implicit subject of the verb. He went on to claim that

I have acknowledged since September 2002 that there were ties between Al Qaeda and Iraq.

So, what was this devious, tricky question that Rumsfeld misunderstood? From Newsday link above:

"Mr. Secretary, what exactly was the connection between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda?"

Does Rumsfeld often find himself confused by questions this difficult?

Gotcha roundup, first go.

Our first gotcha of the night: Cheney met Edwards in February of 2001. (text via Google cache):

Congressman Wamp, Senator Edwards, friends from across America, and distinguished visitors to our country from all over the world: Lynne and I are honored to be with you all this morning. (emphasis added)

Second gotcha: While finally admitting that there was no link between Iraq and 9/11, Cheney also claimed he'd never said anything along those lines. False. Mark Kleiman has quotes and links.

The third gotcha might be claiming that 10 million registered voters in Afghanistan is a good thing - the problem is that 10 million is already more than there are estimated eligible voters in the country.

The fourth gotcha might be claiming that Zarqawi is in Baghdad now. How do the Administration's phony claims of progress made reconcile with Cheney's claim that a major terrorist is in the capital of Iraq, which the US has occupied since April of last year? (In truth, Zarqawi's location is unknown but speculated to be Mosul. This is emblematic of the entire problem with this Administration - they might be certain, but being sure of yourself isn't the same thing as being right.

I say "might" for these last few gotchas because, frankly, the sheer volume of Cheney's dishonesty could swamp any legion of fact-checkers, whether it's at the site he mentioned or the site he actually meant.

update: Kevin Drum has a few more in a handy chart.
